Project

Drew Smith were appointed as Principal Contractor for the redevelopment of the former St Margaret’s Convent School in the centre of Midhurst. The development included the provision of 24 new homes, 25 affordable homes and the conversion of the listed Regency Building into 4 private apartments. Extensive car parking, provision of open spaces and soft landscaping completed the works.

Demolition of the existing school buildings commenced in Summer 2013, with the construction of the new homes phased throughout the project beginning in September 2013 and the final phase completed in Summer 2015. The Sisters of Mercy continued to live in their home at the edge of the site until their new home was completed and they could move in, allowing the demolition of their old home to allow the construction of the final phase to commence late 2014.

The construction of the new homes was timber frame on suspended concrete ground floors. The highly insulated properties achieved Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3, and Secured By Design for building security.

Refurbishment works to the Regency Building were carried out with the ongoing co-operation of the Local Authority Conservation, whilst aiming to retain as much of the original structure and features as possible.
